Dear Reader, Lately, I've been thinking about how quickly we fill the silence. We react. We explain. We defend. We offer our opinions. We speak before we've had time to understand what is moving inside us. Our age gives us an extraordinary ability to make every thought public. But perhaps wisdom is asking for room to pause. Almost two thousand years ago, Pirkei Avot—Ethics of the Fathers—offered this simple teaching: “I have found nothing better for the body than silence.” I wonder if silence is more than simply not speaking. My first pilgrimage was in 2006, and over the years, this once-a-year ritual has become something of an addiction—in the best possible sense. Each...
Dear Reader, We live in a world that rewards constant reaction. We comment, explain, defend, correct and respond—often before we have had a moment to ask ourselves what is really going on beneath the surface. This week on the LivingToBe podcast, I explore what can happen when we become a little more intentional about our words, and discover that silence isn’t emptiness. Sometimes, it is where wisdom begins. My article in this week's Blog that goes live on Tuesday is about what the ancient...
Dear Reader, There are places where the boundary between the ordinary and something deeper feels thin. Ancient peoples understood this instinctively — they built their temples and sacred groves where the human world seemed to draw closer to the divine. But the reverse is also true: some landscapes carry the weight of violence and grief, an atmosphere no rational explanation quite accounts for. On my pilgrimage journeys, I've walked into villages and felt an immediate lightness — open doors,...
