Walking Without Knowing the Road

Dear Reader,

On a recent stretch of the Pilgrims' Way from Winchester, I sat in the cathedral during a morning prayer with a handful of strangers, thinking about everyone who had stood in that same spot before me — wondering, as I was, what any of it means.

I carried Julian of Norwich with me that day. She wrote "All shall be well" from inside the Black Death — not as a promise that things would turn out fine, but as an invitation to trust anyway.

Sometimes, it is where wisdom begins. My article in this week's Blog that goes live on Tuesday is about what the ancient...

Dear Reader, Lately, I've been thinking about how quickly we fill the silence. We react. We explain. We defend. We offer our opinions. We speak before we've had time to understand what is moving inside us. Our age gives us an extraordinary ability to make every thought public. But perhaps wisdom is asking for room to pause. Almost two thousand years ago, Pirkei Avot—Ethics of the Fathers—offered this simple teaching: “I have found nothing better for the body than silence.” I wonder if silence...
